Programming

In an effort to get away from the more traditional ‘box-style’ programs, Smileys Child Care now implement an emergent curriculum which has helped us achieve a program that ‘thinks outside the square’. In the new program, staff use a daily ‘learning journey’ to record what happens in the centre. Traditional programs tend to look at children as lacking or needing to accomplish a great deal rather than recognising them as the able and accomplished people they already are.

The emergent curriculum programming style assists staff to understand the child and see the interests and immense capabilities.

In addition to the daily learning journey, individual journals are kept.

This is a valuable record as it contains observations, artworks, photographs and the achievement of each child throughout the year. These individual journals are kept and updated by each child’s focus educator on a regular basis.
